Where will you go after you die, if not to heaven? To heaven? To hell? Or will there even be any place to go? The main character of the play is Bobby Henderson, founder of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster – a parody religion whose followers are known as Pastafarians. We meet Bobby (portrayed by Jan Jurkowski, familiar to Łaźnia Nowa audiences from Jak nie zabiłem swojego ojca… / How I Didn’t Kill My Father… and Lem vs. P. K. Dick) at the very moment he finds himself in hell – a place he doesn’t even believe in – where he encounters Jesus, Satan, and the Holy Spirit. What could possibly come out of such a meeting in this eschatological antechamber? As it turns out – something very funny indeed.
Mateusz Pakuła – author of the book and director of Jak nie zabiłem swojego ojca i jak bardzo tego żałuję / How I Didn’t Kill My Father and How Much I Regret It, which became a genuine theatrical marvel in just two years – returns to the Łaźnia Nowa stage with a religious farce that grips the audience from the very first scene. As always in Pakuła’s comedies, we are offered sharp verbal humour, surprising dramaturgy, and live music (composed by Antonis Skolias, Marcin Pakuła, Dominik Róg, and Zuzanna Skolias-Pakuła). Zuzanna Skolias-Pakuła as Jesus and Emose Uhunmwangho (winner of last year’s Boska Komedia / Divine Comedy acting award for her role in Pakuła’s musical Złote płyty / Gold Records) in the role of the Holy Spirit deliver dazzling vocal and acting performances. However, The Flying Spaghetti Monster is more than a playful jab at a parody religion that has become a symbol of absurdity itself. Here, Pakuła – whose work consistently engages with themes of social critique – draws attention to the cultural dominance of Catholicism and asks what kind of shared values we can build if such a community were not based on Christian paradigms.
