Probably the most important Polish production in the last months, as far as the response in the community goes. The artistic fulfilment of Maja Kleczewska and the actors of the Słowackiego Theatre in Kraków. One of the most uncompromising directors set Dominika Bednarczyk as Konrad / Konrada, having concluded that one who is capable of assuming responsibility for the community, stand on the first line of the front, and be the true sacrifice in contemporary Poland and world riven with dramatic apprehensions must be a woman. Kleczewska reads Adam Mickiewicz’s masterpiece as a prophetic text and discovers in it a valid commentary on the current events. She portrays the divided Poland, haunted by oppression from the powers that be and the church, yet steps as far from the current political cabaret as she only can. With time, a new horror entered the play. After 24 February and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it gained a sharp anti-Russian undertone which is portrayed in the role of Jan Peszek – Novosiltsov: drawn in broad swipes of the brush yet thoroughly piercing. A truly horrifying creation.
