Eliza Kącka’s book Wczoraj byłaś zła na zielono / Yesterday You Were Angry in Green became a publishing sensation soon after its release. The author writes about her relationship with her autistic daughter – and about meeting halfway between two worlds. One is the world of “normality”: doctors, teachers, friends, neighbours – all eager to offer advice (usually unsolicited), and at times disdain, while showing the child pity or incomprehension. The other is the world of Ruda – a girl who exists in her own universe of meanings, images, and emotions. The mother mediates between these worlds – as narrator, she bears witness to her experience and offers us a glimpse into Ruda’s world, which would otherwise remain beyond our reach.
The stage adaptation for Warsaw’s Dramatic Theatre is a work of Anna Augustynowicz, whose productions, whether drawn from the literary canon or contemporary drama, are marked by formal discipline and meticulous stagecraft. Written for multiple voices orchestrated into an ensemble, this adaptation transforms the story into a musical and rhythmic composition. Casting Anna Moskal as Eliza was an inspired choice: her stage charisma and the determination with which she performs the text resonate powerfully with the strength of both the character and the author herself. Another striking performance is delivered by Marianna Linde, who takes on the demanding role of a child on the autism spectrum. Yesterday You Were Angry in Green is a triumph of the artistic and adaptive strategies Augustynowicz uses, and a remarkable achievement of the ensemble of actors and instrumentalists, who perform together like an orchestra, finely attuned to the balance of presence and audibility of the individual voices on stage.
