We are not that special – a conversation with actors

“Fame” and “being special” come at a price. Actors often have to face and cope with anxiety, impos- tor syndrome, and constant stage fright. But there is more to that story. In recent years, actors have taken on societal roles that go far beyond their profession, which did not meet much widespread under- standing. They’ve also stood up to fight against the powers-that-be
for institutional independence, in many a time risking their careers, and facing hate and contempt-lad- en attacks. For many, actors have ceased to be artists as they have turned into nothing more than “ce- lebrities” feeding on their own fame. What are the particular pangs they have to suffer, and why do they not actually feel they are the chosen ones? The discussion will examine individual challenges and wonder whether we can speak of a true sense of community within the pro-fession. Also of how to cope with the other, dark side of acting?
