Marieke Lucas Rijneveld
Duration:
90 minutes

Two years ago, Małgorzata Wdowik presented Wstyd / Shame from the Nowy Theatre in Warsaw at the Boska Komedia / Divine Comedy. Previously. the festival audiences witnessed e.g., the first part of her emotions trilogy, Gniew / Anger, produced by TR Warszawa. This time, one of Poland’s most prominent contemporary directors brings to Krakow her most original and daring project to date. The inspiration for her début at the Wrocław Pantomime Theatre came from one of the most talked-about books in recent years, Lucas (formerly Marieke Lucas) Rijneveld’s The Discomfort of Evening. The sensational debut by the now transitioned Dutch author, like a lens, captured the neurotic personality of our times, making young people from almost any background identify with the story. The Wrocław production conveys the book’s power, even if it almost lacks words, replacing them with pervasive movement, gestures, and occasional lack thereof. Surprisingly, it remains remarkably faithful to the literary source, enhancing some tropes present in the book. Due to its universally relevant theme, the performance is easily understood regardless of geographical location.
