The mesmerising Katarzyna Chlebny has portrayed Kora Jackowska and Ewa Demarczyk in productions by the Nowy Proxima Theatre. This time, before our eyes, she becomes Rita Marley, the wife of the legendary reggae musician and arguably the most famous figure in the history of Jamaica, Bob Marley. For many, Marley is a symbol of resistance against global political injustice. While Bob is present in this story, the spotlight is on a woman determined to step out of her partner’s shadow, emphasise her own aspirations, build her individuality, and defy societal constraints. Director Paweł Szumiec has the protagonist ask questions to herself and women (and quite likely men) in the audience. Who am I? What am I striving for? What am I trying to break free from? The stage belongs to the charismatic Katarzyna Chlebny, accompanied by the live music of the Mamas and Trawas band, created especially for the performance and playing Bob and Rita’s greatest hits, including No Woman, No Cry and Is This Love. The monodrama is a work of Małgorzata Jantos, best known in Kraków for her social activism and the post of a city councillor she has held since 2002.
