Agnieszka Przepiórska’s one-woman theatre is unique on a national scale. The outstanding actress portrayed the poet Zuzanna Ginczanka in the Łaźnia Nowa, and was the Nobel Prize winner laureate Wisława Szymborska and the eminent biologist Simona Kossak at the Słowacki Theatre. However, Przepiórska does not limit her monodramas to Kraków alone. „You don’t die in May. Barbara sadowska’s story” was created at the History Meeting House in Warsaw and holds a special place in the artist’s repertoire. It tells the story of a poet of the opposition, Barbara Sadowska, the mother of Grzegorz Przemyk, who was killed by ZOMO riot police in May 1982. The play is thoroughly ascetic and compact, yet entirely honest. It only lasts seventy minutes, but its impact is hard to shake off. It may be a tale of unconventional and dishevelled motherhood, yet, above all, it is a story of love that lets you weather through the most extreme moments. It is about the desire for justice against all odds, the belief that people with hearts of stone can be moved, regardless of where they commit their deeds. Although we know how tragically Barbara Sadowska’s fate unfolded, we are not left to fend for ourselves with just our sadness. Agnieszka Przepiórska received the prestigious Zelwerowicz Award for Best Actress in the 2022/23 season for „You don’t die in May. Barbara sadowska’s story”, a prize that is by all means well deserved.
