The Belgian director’s previous work presented in Poland was 3siostry / 3sisters, which graced the Boska Komedia / Divine Comedy as a co-production between TR Warszawa and the National Stary Theatre. On Long Day's Journey into Night, originally Eugene O’Neill’s work, which transformed during rehearsals into Once Upon a Long Day, he worked solely with the Kraków-based ensemble. This production will surprise fans of one of the greatest visionaries in European theatre, as it is likely his most austere work. You’d look in vain for the visuals and effects, which Perceval’s productions are famous for. This time, he completely withdraws behind the actresses and actors of the Stary. He was absolutely right in doing so, as they all deliver remarkable performances, as if they were soaring above the stage. Unforgettable portrayals that will be remembered for years are brought to life by the Zelwerowicz Award-winning Roman Gancarczyk and, above all, Małgorzata Zawadzka. The entire production becomes a painful vivisection of a family in a state of irreversible disintegration, caused by alcohol addiction. Perceval’s work exposes the self-destruction affecting every character without exception, and the diagnosis is unforgiving. Although seemingly modest, this production leaves a stunning impression.
