A consummate comedy and melodrama in one. Yet above all, it is a stage encounter between Daniel Olbrychski and Tomasz Karolak. The first plays an elderly actor in the midst of preparation for the role of Shakespeare’s King Lear. The other plays his son, who shares a difficult past with his father. They haven’t seen each other in years, and now the father surprises his son by knocking at his door and intending to stay much longer... Serge Kribus’s play enjoyed great success in France and was a hit in Paris. Now Olbrychski and Karolak breathe a new life into it. For the two exceptional actors, their roles in Niespodziany powrót / A Startling Comeback carry a highly personal undertone. Daniel Olbrychski once played Lear, and you can easily find many qualities he shares with his character. Tomasz Karolak, in turn, breaks away from his purely comedian image, presenting a side quite different from his appearances in popular films and series. And he does emphasise that the performance has given him an opportunity to confront his personal demons. In short, this play is much more than just another commercial production featuring two stars of the theatre and cinema. It is a genuine surprise.
